Alicia Keys Biography

Alicia Augello Cook, better known by her stage name Alicia Keys, is an American singer, songwriter, and pianist. She was born on January 25, 1981 in New York City, New York. Keys was born into an African-Italian-Puerto Rican mixed family in Midtown Manhattan. Alas, her father left when she was just 2 and thus she was raised by her single mother. She got formal piano training from age 6, and started to compose her own songs by age 12, inspired by the jazz records her mother played to her. She also took part in musical theater productions put on by her school, and attended the Professional Performing Arts School in New York.

Keys was discovered by music manager Jeff Robinson when she was 13. Robinson’s brother was giving vocal lessons to Keys, and urged him to go see her perform. Reluctantly, Robinson obliged, and was taken aback by her performance. At the manager’s advice, Keys ended up pursuing a solo career, as opposed to one in a band, as she originally imagined. She got signed by Columbia Records at age 15. She also got to graduate from high school early and started attending Columbia University at age 16, but dropped out after just a few months - evidently, to focus on her music career.

Keys performed two songs for the soundtracks of two major moves, “Shaft” in 2000 and “Dr. Dolittle 2” in 2001, before putting out her first album. Her debut album came out in June 2001, with the title “Songs in A Minor”. It became a massive hit, topping the famous Billboard 200 chart in the US. The standout track on the record was the contemporary soul song “Fallin’”, which topped the charts in America for weeks. The next year, in 2002, she got to go on her first international Alicia Keys concert tour, “The Songs in A Minor Tour”.

Since then, the R&B superstar has released 7 more studio albums, thus she has 8 in total. The best selling one among them is her first one from 2001, which sold 12 million copies worldwide. Meanwhile, the latest new Alicia Keys album came out in December 2021, with the title “Keys”.

The biggest Alicia Keys hits to date are the aforementioned “Fallin’” (2001), “If I Ain’t Got You” (2003), “No One” (2007), and “Girl On Fire” (2012). She was also featured on hip hop star Jay-Z’s 2009 hit single “Empire State of Mind”. With over 90 million copies of her albums and singles sold, Keys is one of the best selling artists of all time. Billboard Magazine named her the R&B/Hip Hop Artist of the Decade in 2009. Check where the next Alicia Keys concert is playing near you on our page above.
