One Ok Rock, spelled ワンオクロック in Japanese, is a Japanese rock band. They were formed in 2005 in Tokyo, Japan. The founding members were lead guitarist Toru Yamashita (1988, Moriguchi, Japan), bassist Ryota Kohama (1989, Osaka, Japan), rhythm guitarist Alexander Onizawa (1988, Tokyo, Japan), drummer Yu Koyanagi (1988, Tokyo, Japan), and lead singer Takahiro Moriuchi (1988, Tokyo, Japan).
It was Yamashita who came up with the idea of forming a rock band while in high school. He assembled the original line-up, listed above, in 2005. Kohama was a member of the hip hop dance group “HEADS” prior. The new band was named “One Ok Rock”, the phonetic transcription of saying the phrase “One O’Clock” with a heavy Japanese accent, which also deliberately contains the word “rock”. The band used to rent rehearsal spaces at 1 AM as the renting fees were cheaper in those hours, hence the name.
They self-produced 200 copies of a CD titled “Do You Know A Christmas?” at the end of 2005. In 2006, they put out two EP’s (Extended Plays), which resulted in them signing with the Japanese entertainment company Amuse Inc. However, drummer Koyanagi wanted to pursue an acting career instead, so he was replaced by Tomoya Kanki.
Their debut single, “Naihishinsho”, came out in 2007 and reached the #48 spot on the Oricon singles chart in Japan. The band put out two more songs, then went on their first nationwide One Ok Rock concert tour in Japan. Their debut album came out in November 2007, with the title “Zeitakubyō”. It reached the #15 spot on the Oricon albums chart. Their first record to chart in the US was “35xxxv” from February 2015, which peaked at the #23 spot on Billboard’s Hard Rock Albums chart. Their best selling album of theirs is “Ambitions” from January 2017, which sold 350,000 copies in Japan alone. Meanwhile, the latest new One Ok Rock album came out in September 2022, with the title “Luxury Disease”.
The biggest hits in the One Ok Rock setlist to date are “完全感覚” (2010), “The Beginning” (2013), “Clock Strikes” (also 2013), and “Mighty Long Fall” (2015). The band's songs feature both Japanese and English lyrics. Check where the next One Ok Rock concert is playing near you on our page above.
