Foo Fighters Biography

Foo Fighters is an American rock band. They were formed in 1994 in Seattle, Washington. The sole founding member was lead vocalist and guitarist Dave Grohl (born on January 14, 1969 in Warren, Ohio), the former drummer of Nirvana.

Grohl joined the legendary grunge band Nirvana in 1990 as a drummer. After their frontman, Kurt Cobain tragically committed suicide, the band was dismantled. Grohl was rumored to be joining other major bands, such as Pearl Jam or Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. However, he instead started recording his own music. He played every instrument on the tracks and released them anonymously under the name “Foo Fighters”. The name is a World War II term for unidentified flying objects. He was hoping the audience would perceive it as if a whole band was playing.

His demo tape was met with interest from the music industry. It was released as a self-titled album, “Foo Fighters”, by Capitol Records in July 1995. It became a moderate hit, peaking at the #23 spot on the Billboard 200 chart.

Seeing that this project was going somewhere, Grohl decided to form an actual band around it. Since he alone couldn't play all instruments at a Foo Foghters concert, he recruited other musicians. One of the touring guitarists from his old band Nirvana, Pat Smear, joined as the second guitarist, bassist Nate Mendel and drummer William Goldsmith came from the recently dismantled Seattle band Sunny Day Real Estate. Grohl remained on the lead vocals and on the lead guitar. They had their first Foo Fighters concert in early 1995 in Arcata, California.

Their second studio album, the first one produced by a full band line-up, came out in May 1997 with the title “The Colour and the Shape”. It became a massive hit, selling over 2.3 million copies in the United States alone, and reaching the #10 spot on Billboard 200. Since then, the Seattle-based rock band has released 8 more albums, thus they have 10 in total. Their best selling one has remained “The Colour and the Shape” from 1997. Meanwhile, the latest new Foo Fighters album came out in February 2021, with the title “Medicine at Midnight”.

The Foo Fighters’ biggest hits to date are “Everlong” (1997), “Learn to Fly” (1999), “Best of You” (2005), and “The Pretender” (2007). Their current line-up consists of the sole founder Grohl as the lead singer and guitarist, Smear as the second guitarist and backup vocalist, Chris Shiflett as the third guitarist, Nate Mendel as the bassist, and Rami Jaffee as the keyboardist.
