Moriah Rose Pereira, better known by her stage name Poppy, is an American singer, songwriter, and YouTuber. She was born on January 1, 1995 in Boston, Massachusetts. Poppy started taking dance lessons at age 11, originally aspiring to become a Rockette, but later changing her mind and wanting to become a musician. Sadly, she decided to be homeschooled as a teenager due to the excessive bullying she endured in high school. In 2011, she made two YouTube channels, “Moriah Poppy” and “Poppy”, the latter of which is still active today. At age 18, in 2013, she moved to Los Angeles, California to try to make it in the music business.
In LA, she teamed up with filmmaker-musician Titanic Sinclair to create the abstract and comedic Poppy character for her YouTube videos. Controversially, he originally worked with his ex-girlfriend Mars Argo to create videos starring a very similar character. Poppy and Sinclair also started dating. In January 2015, their video titled “I’m Poppy.”, which is just Poppy saying those words over and over again for 10 minutes, went viral, eventually amassing over 28 million views. Even PewDiePie, the then-most subscribed channel, covered Poppy’s viral stunt.
Using the stage name “That Poppy”, she released her debut single, “Everybody Wants to Be Poppy” later that year. She also got signed by the major American label Island Records. Her debut EP (Extended Play) came out in 2016, with the title “Bubblebath”. In October 2017, she released her first full studio album, the art pop record “Poppy.Computer”, under her shortened stage name “Poppy”. It ended up peaking at the #11 spot on Billboard’s new artist-specific Heatseekers chart. She also went on her first international Poppy concert tour, the “Poppy.Computer Tour”, to promote her work.
Since then, the eccentric music artist has released 3 more studio albums, thus she has 4 in total. For her last two 2 LP’s, she drastically changed up her style, writing mostly metal songs for those. This was partly brought on by her parting ways with her romantic and creative partner Sinclair. Her best selling record to date is “I Disagree” from January 2020, which peaked at the #130 spot on the famous Billboard 200 chart. Meanwhile, the latest new Poppy album came out in September 2021, with the title “Flux”. She also performed live Poppy concert shows at multiple WWE events.
Poppy’s biggest hits to date are “Lowlife” (2015), “I’m Poppy” (2017), “Computer Boy” (also 2017), and “X” (2018).
