Kehlani Biography

Kehlani Ashley Parrish, better known by her stage mononym Kehlani, is an American singer, songwriter, and dancer. She was born on April 25, 1994 in Oakland, California. Kehlani was raised by her aunt since her drug addict mother was serving a long jail sentence. Her father (also an addict) had died prior while she was a toddler. She attended Oakland School for the Arts, and aspired to become a professional dancer. However, alas, a knee injury forced her to change course. At age 14, she joined the local pop cover band "Poplyfe".

She soon became the group’s lead vocalist. In 2011, her group entered the reality-talent show America’s Got Talent and ended up finishing in fourth place. Judge Piers Morgan suggested that Kehlani didn’t even need the rest of the group. So, she left them after AGT ended, but couldn't do anything with her career in music due to contractual obligations. This ended up being a huge burden for her, as she was forced to stay at friend’s houses with no housing or income. She even had to resort to stealing iPhones at times. In 2013, Kehlani finally released her first solo track on SoundCloud, “ANTISUMMERLUV”. At that point, America’s Got Talent host Nick Cannon stepped in to help and provided her an apartment in Los Angeles/area/5368361 and recording time in a studio.

She released her first mixtape in 2014. The next year, she got to perform a Kehlani concert show as an opening act for rapper G-Eazy. Kehlani’s second mixtape charted in the top 10 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip Hop Album list. Her debut album came out in January 2017, with the title “SweetSexySavage”. It peaked at the #3 spot on the Billboard 200 chart. Since then, she released two more albums, thus she has 3 in total. The best selling one among has remained her first one, which sold around 500,000 copies worldwide. Meanwhile, the latest new Kehlani album came out in April 2022, with the title “Blue Water Road”.

The biggest hits in the Kehlani setlist to date are “The Way” (2015), “Gangsta” (2016), and Good Life (2017) featuring G-Easy. She was also featured on the 2018 hit song by Cardi B “Ring”. Check where the next Kehlani concert is playing near you on our page above.
