Charlotte Emma Aitchison, better known by her stage name Charli XCX, is an English singer and songwriter. She was born on August 2, 1992 in Cambridge, United Kingdom. Charli XCX was born to a British father and Ugandan mother. Her father had some connection to show business, as he worked as a showbooker for a while. As a young girl, she liked listening to popular pop acts, such as the Spice Girls and Britney Spears, then started to write her own songs at age 14.
Her parents funded the production of her self-made album, “14”, which she uploaded to the late social media site MySpace. There, she was discovered by a promoter who invited her to perform early Charli XCX concert shows at his warehouse raves. She used the stage name “Charli XCX” from the get-go, which was her screen name on MSN Messenger at the time. Her self-produced album soon was commercially released, and she also put out two additional tracks. However, she later expressed her distaste for her early work, calling it “fucking terrible MySpace music”.
In 2012, Charli XCX was featured as the vocalist on the electro-pop hit “I Love It” by the Swedish EDM duo Icona Pop. In April 2013, her first professionally produced album, “True Romance”, was released through Asylum and Atlantic Records. It became a moderate hit, reaching the #85 spot on the OCC chart in the UK, while getting to the #5 spot on Billboard’s new artist-specific Heatseekers chart over in the US. Her second record, “Sucker” from December 2014, however, performed much better, peaking at the #15 spot in Britain, and breaking into the famous overall Billboard 200 chart in the US at #28.
Since then, the British pop diva released 3 more studio albums, thus she has 6 in total. The best selling one among them is the aforementioned “Sucker” from 2014, which sold 850,000 copies worldwide. Meanwhile, the latest new Charli XCX album came out in March 2022, with the title “Crash”. She also co-wrote music for other artists during her career, artists such as Iggy Azalea, Selena Gomez, and Shawn Mendes.
The biggest hits in the Charli XCX setlist to date are “Boom Clap” (2014), “Break the Rules” (also 2014), and “Boys” (2020). She was also featured on the 2014 hit song by Australian hip hop artist Iggy Azalea “Fancy”. Check where the next Charli XCX album is playing near you on our page above.
