Coin, often stylized in all caps as COIN, is an American pop rock band. They were formed in 2012 in Nashville, Tennessee. The founding members were lead vocalist and keyboardist Chase Lawrence (born in 1991 in West Virginia), lead guitarist Joe Memmel, drummer Ryan Winnen, and bassist Zachary Dyke.
Three of the four founders, Lawrence, Memmel, and Dyke were attending Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee, studying music together. In 2012, Lawrance and Memmel decided to form a band. Dyke and Winnen, whom they met through mutual friends, soon joined them. The plan was to record a few songs in order to book live shows in the college area. It worked: they produced four songs and put them on the internet for free. This generated enough buzz for them to be able to book the first few live Coin concert shows around Nashville. The fresh pop rock band became quite popular in the local music scene. They released two EP’s (Extended Plays): one in 2012 and one in 2013.
Their self-titled debut album, "COIN", came out in June 2015, through the major label Columbia Records. It became a moderate success, reaching the #21 spot on Billboard’s new artist-specific Heatseekers chart. Since then, the band has put out four more albums, thus they have five in total. The best selling one among them is “How Will You Know If You Never Try” from April 2017 - this is the only one of their records that ever managed to get on the Billboard 200 chart, peaking at the #177 spot. Meanwhile, the latest new Coin album came out in March 2022, with the title “Uncanny Valley”.
So far, there has been only one change in the Coin line-up: in 2018, bassist and co-founder Dyke left the band. He was replaced by Matt Martin on Coin concert tours. The biggest hits in the Coin setlist to date are: “Run” (2015), “Talk Too Much” (2017), “Crash My Car” (2020), and “Cutie” (2022).
