Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame, John Mellencamp, formerly known as Johnny Cougar, is a rock legend born in Seymour, Indiana. John is responsible for leading the rock sub-genre of heartland rock, which is very popular among blue-collar workers. During his career, John helped to popularize the rock genre, and his numbers are proof of his success. He has sold over 30 million albums in the US and over 60 million worldwide.
John's love for rock music started at an early age, he played for a lot of bands, including the glam rock band Trash. But John's journey into the music industry started when he decided to give up on drugs and travel to New York City to try to sign a record deal with some label.
Between the time traveling from his hometown and NYC, John made some connections and was able to start his career in the rock universe. With some commercial success, John was able to record his first album called "Uh-Huh." In 1985, John put out an album called "Scarecrow." It did really well, reaching No. 2 on the charts that autumn. The album had five songs that made it into the Top 40, like "Lonely Ol' Night" and "Small Town."
Something not everyone knows is that John helped start Farm Aid, a group that raises money to support farm families. The first Farm Aid concert happened in Champaign, Illinois in 1985, with performances by Willie Nelson and Neil Young.
John's album "Whenever We Wanted" was a big success and took him to new heights. Several singles from the album made it high on the Billboard singles chart. The album also featured a cover of Van Morrison's song "Wild Night," performed as a duet with Meshell Ndegeocello.
In 2015, Mellencamp started making a duet album with Carlene Carter. She was his opening act for all the shows on the Plain Spoken Tour and they sang two songs together during his performances. The album they made, called "Sad Clowns & Hillbillies," came out in 2017.
Till today, John proves to everyone that he's a rock legend and that the star inside him is still alive. John is still touring and releasing new partnerships every year. During his career, he has put out 24 studio albums, two live albums, four compilation albums, and 71 singles.
