Formed in the early 90s in Seattle, USA, Pearl Jam is a very important rock/grunge band, responsible for shaping the grunge genre and influencing many bands that would later be formed and emerge. Pearl Jam made it big with their first album, "Ten," in 1991. It rocked the charts for almost five years and has become one of the best-selling rock albums ever, reaching 13 times Platinum in the United States.
The band has Jeff Ament, Stone Gossard, Mike McCready, and Eddie Vedder as original members. Matt Cameron joined later in 1998 as the drummer. Boom Gaspar joined in 2002 as a keyboardist for tours and sessions.
The formation of Pearl Jam came after some unexpected events. Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament were in Green River in the mid-1980s. They toured and recorded with moderate success but split in 1987 due to differences with other members. Later that year, Gossard and Ament formed Mother Love Bone with vocalist Andrew Wood.
After Andrew Wood's death, Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard formed a new band and sent out a demo for a singer and drummer. Eddie Vedder, recommended by a friend, joined after recording vocals for their songs. With Mike McCready and Dave Krusen, they became Mookie Blaylock, then Pearl Jam. The band's name origins were initially mythologized but later clarified.
Pearl Jam's music style is lighter and inspired by classic rock from the 1970s compared to other grunge bands in the early 1990s. They are influenced by bands like The Beatles, The Who, Led Zeppelin, and artists such as Jimi Hendrix. Their sound combines 70s stadium rock with catchy hooks and choruses.
To this day, the band is one of the most successful rock bands in the entire world. The band sold over 85 million albums worldwide, and 32 million in the US by 2012, making them one of the best-selling bands. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017, they ranked eighth in Rolling Stone's "Top Ten Live Acts of All Time."
